User Geolocation Restriction v1.0.0 User Geolocation Restriction (henceforth UGR) is an advanced tool that offers additional spam prevention functionality to your community focusing directly on your members' location. It is no secret that the vast majority of spammers originate from a handful of countries. Denying member registration to visitors from those countries, or at least accepting the registration but automatically banning them for future review, or even, as an extreme measure, denying access to them is by itself a very effective way to almost completely counterfeit spamming. So, UGR does exactly this: It allows you to control what locations (countries) are permitted to access your board and/or register an account to it. Of course an admin may lose some legitimate members who originate from those countries (should they opt to completely deny registration), but there are admins who will gladly make this sacrifice for the sake of a spam-free community. For those admins who don't want to make such a sacrifice there is the option to permit registrations from blacklisted locations, but ban the member automatically. UGR works in the following way: Upon a visitor's visit or attempt to register an account to your community, the app locates their IP, and according to the way you have set it up, it can deny access to them, or deny their registration request, or accept the request and ban the member for future review. In the unfortunate event that their IP cannot be located (less than 0,001% probability for this situation), their IP is characterized as undetermined and, again, according to the way you have set the app to deal with undetermined IPs, they can be allowed or denied access and/or registration to your community. Additionally, UGR offers geolocation statistics right into your ACP. Simply visit the Overview page of the app, and you will find a pie chart showing the percentage of each location your members originate from. Moreover, you can find statistics about the number of access and registrations prevented from each location of your Blacklist; therefore you get useful details to further adjust and fine-tune your Blacklist by adding or removing countries to it. Finally, UGR integrates effectively with your Members section in your ACP, adding a neat hover card for your members' IP addresses in all four locations where their IP is displayed (single member view, members list, incomplete members list, validating members list), where you can find additional info besides their country, such as city, ISP, longitude, latitude, etc. Last, but not least, Members Search form is also extended, adding search criteria based on members' location, allowing you to search members from blacklisted, whitelisted, undetermined (where an IP's location cannot be determined), undiscovered (after you run once the Discover Locations tool, this will return no results) locations. Some interesting stats taken from my community where UGR runs since March 2012 until today (November 20, 2012): Total spammer registrations prevented: 102,664 Top 15 spammer countries - Number of spammer registrations prevented: China - 26,955 United States - 16,510 Russian Federation - 13,590 Ukraine - 11,994 Poland - 4,607 France - 3,922 Germany - 3,294 Sweden - 3,288 United Kingdom - 2,526 Netherlands - 2,147 Thailand - 1,997 Romania - 905 Moldova, Republic of - 828 Korea, Republic of - 747 Turkey - 682 Disclaimer: My certainty about the legitimacy of the above numbers comes from the fact that my community is 100% Greek spoken, so I doubt any member coming from those countries wanted to become an active member of it for any reason other than for spamming. Duplicate Members Logger v3.0.2 Duplicate Members Logger logs, using a Flash cookie, and reports members who use multiple accounts from the same computer to access your IP.Board community. The use of a Flash cookie makes the application a cross-browser solution to deal with "ghost" members, as it detects and reports them even if they use one browser for each registered account or even after they clear their browser's cache. In version 3.0.2 of the application many and great enhancements have been added, and all existing features have been greatly improved to make the application an even more robust solution to deal with such situations. New account registration control: The detection of a duplicate account now begins at its registration. Through the appropriate setting, you can choose among allowing a duplicate account registration, allowing it but immediately banning it, or completely prohibiting its creation. ACP feature Log-in as member: With IP.Board 3.2 a new feature was introduced as a tool to help admins assist members of their community. This was the Log-in as member feature, which as a side-effect confused the application that reported the admin as a duplicate of the members the admin logged in as. This was of course not a bug of the application. It was a situation it was not programmed to deal with. The new version however can detect and ignore the use of this feature very efficiently. PM notifications: You can now, with a click of a button, send a PM to all members of each duplicate group notifying them that you know about their actions and asking them for an explanation. Actually, the content of the PM is even configurable through the appropriate setting. Topic postifications: Additionally, you can now, with a click of a button, post a new topic in a (selectable through the appropriate setting) forum about all members of each duplicate group notifying them that you know about their actions, and also warning the rest of the members that they should be alert in case they get scammed by those duplicate members. Member comments: A very useful feature was added that allows you to store comments for each member found either in Duplicates Management or in Exclusions Management section making it easier for you to remember i.e. the reason a member was excluded from producing duplicate reports, etc. Integration in Edit Member page: The application embeds perfectly within the Edit member page in ACP. A new tab, labeled Duplicate Members Logger, is added where you can set/unset a member as Excluded to control whether they will further produce duplicate reports or not. Additionally, you can view/edit the machine IDs of the machines each member has used to access your community. Integration in Moderator CP: The application also embeds in Moderator CP to show registration attempts that came from computers that were previously used by other accounts to access your community. This module splits the attempts in two categories: Registration attempts that resulted in a banned account and Registration attempts that were completely rejected (based on the setting mentioned above). Additionally, through the appropriate setting you can choose who can view this section of Modedator CP. You can choose between Administrators only, or Administrators and Moderators. Finally, an alert similar to the community's stock Report center alert is triggered whenever such new attempts are detected. Application Overview: This section displays an overview of statistics, as well as the application's status. The statistics have been improved and include: Unique Machines With One Member/With Multiple Members and also Unique Members From One Machine/From Multiple Machines. These, while seemingly unimportant, can let you understand the habits of your members. In two words, they display the number of unique machines and members that have accessed your community. Additionally, they are now visually represented with the appropriate charts. Typically, these stats do not include Excluded members, but should you need to count them as well, you can do that by clicking the appropriate button. Duplicates Management: Maybe the greatest improvement of the application is the way it deals with duplicate accounts. Through a complex but lightweight algorithm, it groups all accounts that used the same computer to access your community, and presents them in a list. Scenario: Member A logs in the community from Machine A. Member B logs in the community from Machine B. Member C, who normally logs in the community from Machine C, logs in once from Machine A and once from Machine B. This will result in showing Member A, Member B and Member C as a Duplicate Group, with Member C being the link between Member A and Member B. For any such duplicate group, a number of options is available. You can either Exclude, Ban/Unban, or Delete any single member, and there are also mass options, like Notify All (through a PM) the whole group, Ban All/Unban All, or Delete All by clicking the appropriate button. Finally, there may be cases where a member incidentally has to log into the community from a computer that is normally used by another member (i.e., they are friends, etc). Those will be reported as duplicates in the application. However, you may not completely trust them to mark any/both as excluded. In such cases, you can now remove the machine ID from the system that links the members together, thus removing the duplicate itself. The machine ID of course will be reinserted in the system the next time it is used by any of the members to access the community but it will now correspond to just one of them. You can find which machine was used by each member through hovering with your mouse over each machine ID. Exclusions Management: This section has also undergone improvements. Actually, the way exclusions work has completely changed. You do not exclude pairs of members anymore. You exclude single members, and those members will never again trigger a duplicate report, no matter how many accounts they create. Thus, it is advised to use this feature carefully and only exclude trusted members. Settings: Here you can set the settings of the application to tailor it to the needs of your community. IP.Board has always been incredibly pro-active in preventing spam users from signing up by making use of built in tools such as the question and answer challenge, spam monitoring service and CAPTCHA systems. I'd like to take a moment to talk about some enhancements we've made in IP.Board 3.4.0 to help prevent unwanted posts and spam. Spam Monitoring Improvements We've further enhanced the spam monitoring service in IP.Board 3.4.0 by adding a new option: "Do not permit the user to register an account". This reduces the amount of clean up you need to do after a new wave of attempted spam user sign-ups. Furthermore, the "flag a member as a spammer" tool optionally deletes posted content rather than simply hiding them further reducing the amount of work needed to maintain your community. We have also totally reworked our spammer-detection logic behind the scenes to make the spam monitoring service detect spammers more quickly. In addition to internal changes, we are also looking at direct integration with services like Project Honey Pot and others. The great thing about the spam monitoring service is that we can make improvements on our side that are instantly beneficial to your community. keyCAPTCHA Integration IP.Board has made good use of the popular reCAPTCHA service to limit the number of "bots" that sign up to your forum with the intent of posting spam. The idea being that a slightly jumbled selection of letters is easy enough for a human to read but more difficult for a computer program. However, some do find that the CAPTCHA images are becoming increasingly complex to keep up with more intelligently written programs to defeat them. KeyCAPTCHA takes a novel approach to this problem by using images instead of letters and numbers. You simply arrange a few large pieces of a very simple puzzle to complete an image. You don't need to be completely accurate when building the image, either. This is now an option in the IP.Board Admin CP. Should you wish to enable it, you'll need to register an account with keyCAPTCHA. The link for this is contained in the setting form and is very straight forward. There has been much confusion over the recent exploit reported to us and subsequently patched. I would like to personally apologize for any confusion and inconvenience caused. We have conducted a review and made appropriate changes to our policies to ensure a smoother release and notification schedule for any future incidents. With that said, it is very important to note that while an IP.Board vulnerability did exist, its impact would have been minimal, if not non-existent on servers that have their PHP installations properly secured. I would like to touch on a couple of basics to minimize the effects of future vulnerabilities not only in IP.Board, but any other PHP application you may be using on your website. open_basedir It's very important that you (if you manage your own web hosting server) or your web host enable open_basedir. In a shared hosting environment without open_basedir, an attacker has the ability to exploit a vulnerability, perhaps on another customer's account, then use that vulnerability to scan for other customers on the server. From there, they could gain access to config files containing database details, write malicious files to world-writeable directories and a host of other ill-willed activities. Enabling open_basedir "locks" all internal PHP functions such as readfile() to the specified path, which is generally a temporary directory and your home directory. disable_functions While open_basedir is a very positive step in securing your PHP scripts, there are unfortunately instances in which it can be bypassed and this is how the recent IP.Board vulnerability gained ground so quickly. For example, the exec(), system() and passthru() functions allow a command to be issued directly to the operating system to view key system files, navigate through other users' web root directories, install 'remote shell' scripts into other users' directories, etc. without any regard to other restrictions such as open_basedir. For this reason, disable_functions should be set to disable system level functions. For example, this is a recommended disable_functions: disable_functions = escapeshellarg,escapeshellcmd,exec,ini_alter,parse_ini_file,passthru,pcntl_exec,popen,proc_close,proc_get_status,proc_nice,proc_open,proc_terminate,show_source,shell_exec,symlink,system You or your host may need to tweak to suit, but at a minimum, execution commands should be disabled. Following the above, you will not necessarily create a fool-proof environment, but you will have additional reassurances that you or your host have taken appropriate measures to better secure your PHP applications. For those that run a cPanel/WHM server you may enable open_basedir by visiting WHM and clicking the "PHP open_basedir Tweak" link under "Security Center" then clicking enable. You may modify the disable_functions line by visiting WHM and clicking "PHP Configuration Editor" under "Service Configuration" then clicking "advanced" and searching for "disable_functions" If you are unsure or do not have the necessary permissions to carry out these tasks, please do contact your host.
